From what Vriska explains to John, trolls design their own hive, and I don’t see trolls as a very cooperative race, so I think multiple grubs building their hives together would be hazardous, an architectural disaster.
Maybe Sollux spent all his money as a wiggler on technology, and was too broke to build his own hive, so he had to get a prebuilt one in a hivestem and used the rest of his allowance on simple decorating?
Or maybe, hivestems are like dormitories. Like, because of his eyes he’s obviously got psionic mutations. So he has to live in a hivestem instead of his own hive, because it’s harder to avoid conscription, he can’t hide from it.
